When Cyclone Alfred took a swing at the Gold Coast’s famous giant Golf Ball
If you’ve driven through Mermaid Waters on the Gold Coast, chances are you’ve seen it: the iconic 4-metre-wide golf ball perched proudly at the front of Putt Putt Mermaid Waters. A true Gold Coast landmark and a local favourite.
But in March, Cyclone Alfred had other plans.
The massive golf ball structure didn’t quite weather the storm, and unfortunately, it came off second best. Knocked to the ground and left with serious damage, it needed some attention. Not just for safety, but to restore its rightful place as one of the Gold Coast’s most recognisable roadside icons.
That’s where we came in.
Specialised Transport for a very unique load
At Walkabout Services, we’re no strangers to unique and unusual loads. So when our mates at Sunset Signs in Yatala were tasked with refurbishing the giant golf ball, we were brought in to handle the transport.
This wasn’t your average project. With a 4-metre diameter and some serious height to consider, it required precision planning, careful route management, and some custom trailer modifications to ensure safe and smooth transport.
And yes, we’re pleased to report… Everything went exactly to plan.
